Camp Kesam - Since 2000, Camp Kesem has provided a FREE service that has given children affected by a parent’s cancer the opportunity to just be kids.  The ever-expanding Kesem community engages in camp activities like sports, arts and crafts, and drama to give campers a fun-filled week.  Campers also participate in “Cabin Chats” with fellow campers and counselors, giving children the chance to share their experiences with each other.  There are plenty of laughs and lots of emotional support, but Camp Kesem does not provide therapy.  The tremendous fun and support campers experience is what makes Camp Kesem a transformative, magical week for campers and counselors alike.

Wolverine Health Explorers Summer Camp (WHE).  WHE is a non-residential summer camp for high school students interested in gaining exposure to the health professions while deepening their understanding of their own personal interests, values and skills.  WHE is sponsored by the University of Michigan Career Center. Participants will engage in a variety of stimulating, hands-on activities in several schools and colleges on the UM Ann Arbor campus, interacting with faculty and staff, research scientists and graduate students. They will learn about opportunities in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, genetic counseling, nursing, public health, movement science and research. Leslie Science Center needs help with summer camp, work in the garden, help with the animal care and clean-up, and assorted other tasks.  Kids can let us know what interests them. Interested students can call 997-1553.

Ann Arbor PTO Thrift Shop is great to do in summer - this is when they need the most help and you can make money towards school events and for the Village Fund. It averages $8 per hour that you can put towards any school related trip or fundraising activity. You can even make a sign-in page for yourself that is "to be announced" - in other words you can save money towards that big Latin club trip, forum trip, or band trip that hasn't even been planned yet! Go in to the shop to sign up for hours any time. It's fun work, in 2 hour shifts, available 7 days a week - and you get a preview of all the cool thrift shop deals.  2280 S. Industrial Highway, 996-9155. Tanya (CHS PTO Thrift shop coordinator)

Other suggestions. Volunteers are sought at the Hands-On Museum, local nursing homes/retirement centers and at the Peace Neighborhood Center. Students volunteer for organizations like the Shelter of Ann Arbor, the St. Andrews Breakfast Program and Food Gatherers. Teaching and child care opportunities exist at churches and synagogues.

Other summer activities? Help out an elderly neighbor with lawn care

Rotary Youth Exchange Programs
Rotary Youth Exchange involves both school year and short term (2-4wk+) exchanges in foreign countries. High school students between the ages of 15 and 19 are eligible for Rotary Youth Exchange. As the oldest exchange program of its kind, Rotary Youth Exchange takes pride in choosing students who are academically above average, articulate, and demonstrate leadership in their communities. Ideal candidates should also possess qualities — like flexibility and a willingness to try new things — that will enable them to become excellent cultural ambassadors. You do not have to be involved with Rotary in any way in order to apply, although children of Rotarians are more than welcome to participate.
